Gilding paper, applying thin leaves of gold leaf to paper is technique used over thousands of years for use in manuscript illumination. It can be done with raised gesso creating a low relief or gilded flat with no height from the page, an approach known as Flat Gilding.

Both methods of Raised and Flat Gilding can be adapted by the Fine artist working in various mediums on paper, such as  watercolor, pastels, or egg tempera. A class of special interest to Fine Artists, Caligraphers, Scribes, and Alternative Photographers!

Sgraffito is a technique that is used in gilding where a paint such as egg tempera is applied over gold or silver leaf and then a design etched through the paint to reveal the underlying leaf.

This class addresses the technique of Flat Gilding with applied EGg Tempera Paint for Sgraffito.

  • Learn how to prepare the ancient mordants Glair and Gum Ammoniac

  • Painting with Shell Gold and Shell Silver

  • Explore options for Contemporary adhesives including Acrylic Emulsion, and Kölner Miniatum Ink

  • Prepare Traditional Egg Tempera Paint with Egg Yold, Water, and Dry Pigments

  • Develop your skill in handling genuine 24k Gold Leaf with the gilder’s Pad, Knife, and Tip

Students will apply gold leaf loosely to Cold Pressed water color paper as well as Hot Pressed paper that will be hydrated, applied to a backing board and taped around the edges to prevent buckling. Students will then paint the egg tempera paint over the leaf and etch for Sgraffito

Additional exercises include gilding the paper without the egg tempera paint and creating flat gilded designs in 24k gold and silver-colored leafs. ~

Note: Question and Answer periods are included in each weekly session. Classes are both Live Online and Recorded. Recordings remain viewable for six months after the series ends.

A Materials List will be provided upon Registration. ~
